After graduating from good old Fort Smith High School I attended St. Johns Jr. College in Winfield, Kansas for my Associate of Arts degree in Business. I then returned to Fort Smith and joined what was then the 184 Tac Recon Sq. with the Arkansas Air National Guard. After twenty-six years I retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in charge of the Munitions Branch. I had many great experiences and the building of many life long relationships.
In 1960 I joined the family firm of the Harry G. Barr Company as a wholesale salesmen covering Arkansas and Oklahoma. Many more years of great learning experiences were still in store for me. While on active duty during the Berlin Crises in ‘61 I met Jo Ann Hofrichter, a graduate of St. Scholastica. We were married in 1967. We compromised as to the number of children we would like to raise together. Jodi wanted to have three and I wanted to have two; we were blessed with five. We had just the right number of four boys and one girl. In order, Scott, Brian, Hayden, Douglas, and at last a girl named Courtney Jo. Why do girls have two names? Only in the South.
I have been reading about all of you retired folks. Well, I am having more fun as VP of Marketing with the Harry G. Barr Company than I have ever had before. As of now Larry Barr, whom many of you know, is President, I am VP, Brian, one of my sons and two of my deceased brother's sons are all part of the firm. We have more Barr’s than a Law firm. Barr, Barr, Barr, Barr, and Barr. Jodi and I have been blessed with a loving and caring family on all sides. Plus we have a twenty-month-old grandson by the name of Isaac Scott Barr. What a joy.
Thank you for this opportunity to share with you. We look forward to seeing you at the reunion.
